The Sikar hostel rate sheet says ₹7,000/month. The actual monthly outflow is often ₹10,000–12,000. Here’s where the gap comes from — and how to spot it before signing.
The 10 Hidden Costs Most Parents Miss
1. Electricity “if used beyond average”
Many hostels include a base electricity allowance and charge extra for AC, geyser, or heavy laptop use. Ask: “Is electricity included or metered? If metered, what’s the typical monthly bill?” — should be ₹300–800 if included, ₹1,000–2,000 if metered.
2. Wi-Fi as add-on (or “premium” tier)
Some hostels list “Wi-Fi available” but charge ₹500–800/month extra for the room socket or premium speed. Ask point-blank: “Is Wi-Fi at room speed included in the rate?”
3. Mess on holidays / leave days
If the mess is closed for Diwali/Holi or your child takes 7 days off to go home, do you still pay full mess fee? Read this clause carefully.
4. Laundry beyond “X items/week”
“Laundry included” often means 7–10 items per week. Beyond that, ₹5–10 per item. Ask for the cap.
5. AC charges if room has AC
AC rooms cost ₹1,500–3,000/month more than cooler rooms. Some hostels also charge separate AC running charges in peak summer (April–July).
6. Security deposit “adjustments”
The deposit is supposed to be 100% refundable minus damages. Some hostels deduct “cleaning charges,” “final mess settlement,” or “paint touch-up” arbitrarily. Get the deduction policy in writing.
7. “Annual maintenance” fee
Some properties add an ₹1,500–3,000 annual maintenance fee at lease start, often not mentioned in the rate sheet. Ask: “Are there any one-time charges beyond rent and deposit?”
8. Visitor / parent stay charges
When you visit Sikar to see your child for the weekend, some hostels charge ₹300–500/night for using the room. Worth knowing if you visit often.
9. “Premium” mess upgrades
Standard mess might be basic dal-roti-sabzi. “Premium” tier with paneer, sweets, fruits costs ₹1,500–2,000 more per month. Decide based on what your child will actually use.
10. Lock-in / early-exit penalty
If your child changes coaching mid-year and needs to relocate, some hostels charge 1–2 months’ rent as exit penalty. Ask about the notice and penalty clauses upfront.
The Honest Test: Get a Full Quote in Writing
Before signing, ask for an itemised quote covering: rent, security deposit, electricity, Wi-Fi, AC if applicable, laundry caps, mess holiday policy, annual fees, exit clauses. If the hostel hesitates to put it in writing, that’s the signal.
